DEVELOPING TOMORROW'S CURES TODAY
In 1972, Dr. Kenneth N. Matsumura established the Alin Foundation-Corporation primarily as a biotechnology research funding organization. In the 30 plus years since then, Alin Foundation has helped develop lifesaving treatments for the four diseases -- heart attack, cancer, diabetes, and liver failure -- which combined are responsible for most of the deaths in the United States today. Each of these developments represents a stunning breakthrough in its field.
HeartAlarm wristwatch --The HeartAlarm warns its wearer an hour or more before a heart attack occurs. Designed to be worn by everyone over the age of 40, this device could prevent as many as one million deaths annually, worldwide.
Cancer medication -- The tragedy of cancer is the suffering patients endure while receiving chemotherapy, often without being cured. This new drug eliminates the side effects of chemotherapy, allowing more effective treatment with dosages that would otherwise be lethal. Not only will this drug put an end to immeasurable misery, it will save up to five million lives annually, worldwide.
Bio-artificial pancreas -- This device will maintain normal blood sugar levels in diabetics, regardless of what they eat or when. For one version of this device, some components were manufactured on the NASA Space Shuttle. There are over 10 million insulin-dependent diabetics who can benefit from an implantable bio-artificial pancreas.
Bio-artificial liver -- This device is designed to be used outside the body to maintain patients who are suffering liver failure due to hepatitis, cirrhosis, or the crisis of rejection of a liver transplant. Up to two million lives could be saved by this device annually.
Other special projects -- Other developments to be reported here later include a portable medical records system, an ovulation monitoring device for fertility enhancement and birth control, and new approaches to treating viral infections such as cytomegalovirus and herpes.
